We are hard at work with renovations in the Military Exhibit Hall! So far, the new walls have been constructed, covered in drywall, and painted. New lights and flooring have been installed.
The new exhibit will consist of seven sections: Introduction, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Cold War (Korean/Vietnam Wars), War on Terror, and a Hall of Honor.
We plan to have the renovations complete by November 11, 2019: Veteran's Day.
The Hall of Honor will contain a large computer that will enable visitors to search our database for information on veterans from Shelby County. Additionally, the room will feature a plaque for each Shelby County serviceman or woman that died during their service due to a duty related incident (combat, training, etc.).
These are a few examples of the text panels that will be placed in the exhibit. The majority of the photographs will come from the Shelby County Historical Museum’s collection, and will tie events happening abroad to events happening in Iowa, and more specifically, Shelby County.
How you can help! We are still looking to expand our veterans database. If you have any veterans’ photos or records that you would be willing to share with us, please contact the museum at 712-755-2437 or firstname.lastname@example.org. We are able to scan the items into our database, so you can keep the originals!
