Legacy and Planned Giving to the Shelby County Historical Society
When you leave a legacy gift, it shows your commitment to the betterment of our community, the preservation of our history, and supports the opportunity for future generations to explore our rich past.
Gift to the Endowment
A bequest in your will can be the simplest form of planned giving. You can designate a fixed amount or a percentage of your estate to SCHSM. Financial planners routinely recommend updating your will at least once every five years.
You may designate a percentage of your asset to the museum as a primary or contingent beneficiary. There may be tax advantages for your estate or your heirs for giving appreciated assets or taxable retirement accounts directly to a non-profit. Consult with your financial advisor.
You may give directly to our Endowment at any time. Our Endowed Fund was established in 2009 and ensures the ongoing financial stability of the Society and Museum.
What is the Endowed Fund?
The Shelby County Historical Endowed Fund is a monetary fund set up under the Shelby County Community Foundation. This fund has a strong interest rate to promote the growth of our organization, but we are unable to withdraw from its principal balance. Endowment funds are structured this way in order to aid organizations, such as ours, in perpetuity. So, while an endowment may give the appearance of having large financial resources - we in fact are unable to utilize nearly all of those resources at any given time.
