JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Grants and Development Coordinator
The Shelby County Historical Society and Museum (SCHSM) is located in Harlan, Iowa, and was founded in 1965. The Mission of the SCHSM is to be a trusted resource of/for the history of Shelby County that instills pride while educating and inspiring all generations. The SCHSM oversees a 4-building complex, consisting of two exhibit buildings and two historic log cabins.
This job announcement is for the hiring of a Grants and Development Coordinator for the Shelby County Historical Society and Museum.
The Grants and Development Coordinator oversees all aspects of SCHSM fundraising and development, marketing, community outreach, and membership. The position works in a collaborative environment with the Executive Director, other staff, and volunteers developing fundraising strategies, grant opportunities, and fostering relationships with members and the community. This position requires someone with a thorough understanding of nonprofit development who has demonstrated the ability to think strategically.
This position is designated as exempt and may require evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
Education and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Museum Studies, or equivalent program
Internship experience in a marketing or a development role within a nonprofit organization
Familiarity with grant writing and the fundraising process
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
Must work well under pressure, multi-task, be self-motivated, and manage ambiguity
The following qualifications are highly desirable:
1-2 year of professional experience in grant writing or development
Ability and experience with donor cultivation and stewardship
Storytelling - the ability to craft a compelling narrative for grants and other fundraising activities.
Strong customer service skills and attention to detail
Experience or interest in graphic design and other technologies
Willingness to learn or experience using MailChimp, Hootsuite, Gsuite, and CRM software
Ability to work both independently and as a team member with other museum staff to develop and implement plans for fundraising, grants, and membership services
Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
Development and Fundraising:
Identify corporate, governmental, and foundation grant opportunities that may provide financial, in-kind, or other support for SCHS mission and programs
Identify private donor opportunities that may contribute to short- and long-term growth of The Shelby County Historical Society Endowed Fund
Execute all donor cultivation and stewardship activities including gift proposals, thank you letters, and follow-up communication
Fundraise actively to help meet both the needs of day-to-day operations and special projects
Manage grants calendar and provide reports as required on applications planned, pending, successful, and declined
Craft and submit LOIs (Letter of Intent) and grant proposals to private foundations and other funders
Manage the entire grant process from crafting compelling budgets to post-award and close-out documentation
Manage end-of-the-year campaign including creating and writing appeal letter
Manage marketing and advertising
Manage the museum’s digital presence including developing content for its website and social media accounts
Develop and manage advertising including social media outreach, traditional radio, and print
Create brochures, posters, and social media posts
Community outreach and Historical Society management
Maintain relationships with local business, funders, news outlets, and other community organizations
In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and distribute the Historical Society quarterly newsletter
Develop, schedule, and execute large and small events – both fundraising and educational programing
Provide educational tours, answer questions, and engage with museum guests
Manage Historical Society membership including managing the membership database, sending renewal reminders, and developing additional membership benefits
Work collaboratively and in a cost-effective fashion within a small, collegial organizational structure that requires all staff members to be flexible, responsive, and willing to assist with day-to-day SCHS operations and visitor relations:
Demonstrate decorum and professional behavior at all times when working with the public, volunteers, and fellow employees.
Assist staff with exhibit creation activities
Provide staff support for all major SCHS public programs, including weekend and evening events.
Other duties as assigned
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing professional networks
Submit regular information to board members through monthly reports
Participate in outreach through contributions to the Shelby County Historical Society newsletter, columns in the Harlan Newspaper, and participation in Museum events and activities
Must have transportation and valid driver’s license
Must be willing to work some evening and weekends
Ability to stoop, couch, kneel, push and lift up to 40 pounds, occasionally in confined spaces, on ladders, or in rooms only accessible via stairs
